I have my hot little hands (OK, big hands) on three new smart phones/PDAs/Cameras/whatevers that look very impressive so far.  I will report on each of them in more detail in the near future.  The three I am playing with:  Palm’s new  Treo Pro (sleek, slim, light and running on Windows Mobile 6.1, unlocked GSM);  the Blackberry Bold (for about a week the hottest Blackberry around, amazingly better visual presentation and a very nice physical thumb board, currently available from AT&T); and the very impressive (already my favorite Blackberry, the Storm (no physical keyboard, but multiple virtual keyboards, excellent graphics, and a touch screen you have to try to believe.  It actually gives you a physical click response to a key press).  Anyway, I will keep you posted on how they do as I test them in various situations and put them through their paces. tonalin cla gnc chitosan performance enhancer Dirty Sanchez: The Movie hd

“SAR”, an acronym for Specific Absorption Rate, relates to the body’s absorption of radiation emanating from a mobile phone. Intermittently, we hear frenzied concerns that cell phones cause brain cancer. Studies to date have proven largely inconclusive. Accordingly, I have not found them convincing one way or the other. Remember, however, that the cell phone has only recently become a part of the daily routine of such a large portion of humanity. We will know a lot more in 30 years, but by then, many of us may already have suffered irreparable damage. Don’t forget that people did not consider cigarettes dangerous to health for a very long time. In the US, the FCC imposes a SAR limit of 1.6 watts per kilogram (”W/kg“) over a volume of 1 gram of tissue. Europe uses a standard of 2W/kg averaged over 10 grams of tissue. Many phones have come out first in Europe and then later in the US.

For some time, people have purchased unlocked GSM phones in Europe and brought them back to the US. If you wish to reduce exposure to SAR, you may want to wait until new models come out here.

The theoretical danger comes from the fact that basically, the RF waves ”cook“ tissue by heating it. While use of the cell phone held up to your ear for short periods of time may pose a minor risk, logic dictates that, if the risk exists, the longer you hold the phone by your ear, the more likely that brain tissue near the ear will suffer heat damage. Does this mean that we should all dump our cell phones or that the Surgeon General should require a warning printed on the back of the phone? Probably not, but, common sense suggests that we should exercise some caution. RF waves dissipate over distance. The farther that we keep the phone from our body, the less likely that it will cause any problem for us. Using the phone’s speakerphone and keeping the phone on a desk or table when you talk offers one way of reducing exposure. As Bluetooth uses a lower power, it poses a smaller risk and, therefore, using a Bluetooth headset and keeping the phone in a brief case seems prudent. A wired headset does not generate radiation, but generally results in keeping the phone closer to our bodies.

Selecting a phone with a lower SAR also should reduce the risk of exposure. CNET has a nifty chart showing the 10 highest and l0 lowest SAR rated cell phones in the US and also providing information about other phones on a lookup basis. The 10 lowest included phones from Motorola (two iterations of the Motorola Razr the Razr V3x and Razr2 V8), five phones from Samsung and two from Nokia. The Palm Centro models ranged from 0.74 to 1.35 W/kg, while the Treo models ranged from 1.26 to 1.5 W/kg. The original Apple iPhone came in at 0.974 W/kg and the iPhone 3G rates a 1.38 W/kg. Memory size appears to have no impact on the ratings. The Blackberry Pearl models lists at 1.22 to 1.48 W/kg.

I have been playing with Blackberry’s new Bold for a month or so. I am very impressed with it. For my money, when it first came out it was the best piece of hardware released to date by Research in Motion. It remains an excellent telephone, but in my opinion eclipsed by the Storm, released shortly after the Bold. I will write about the Storm later.

The Bold does everything that previous Blackberry devices did, only better in most cases. The size and shape of the Bold does not radically differ from the last generation of devices, but it has a finish that looks more substantial and professional than the plastic-cased Curve.

The Bold comes with built-in GPS, a 2.0 MP camera, Blackberry Maps, video recording capability, Wi-Fi, the standard compliment of PDA programming (calendar, contacts, etc.) and handles mail with the typical Blackberry aplomb. It also provides excellent telephony (including a built-in speakerphone), SMS/MMS support and plays MP3 music.

Without a doubt, the Bold’s biggest upgrade relates to its display. The display has a half VGA resolution (480 x 360 pixels) and uses a backlit transmissive TFT LCD screen. The display is bright, deep and rich. I judge it as far and away the best display on any Blackberry as of the release of the Bold.

The Bold has a full qwerty-style keypad and I like the touch, feel and size of the keys.

The Bold initially came out only on the AT&T system and works with the AT&T Edge network to provide reasonably fast Internet support. It is a GSM phone and should prove to be “unlockable”, allowing you to use it with other GSM systems throughout the world once you have an unlocked unit.

RIM claims 4.5 hours of talk time and 13.5 hours of standby time for the Bold. Because of the way I use and test phones, I have never matched the amount of talk or standby time on any phone that the manufacturer claims for it and the Bold is no exception. So many people have said so much about the new iPhone, that I won’t take a lot of time to describe it or even to talk about it. Blood Work move It qualifies as the hottest, slickest and best phone currently on the market. I really enjoy mine. Everyone in my family now has an iPhone and they all love their iPhones. My wife even learned to text message on it and she loves to use it to check her email and look things up on the Internet while she is out and about.

I love all the apps that I can add to it. Some of them have proven very useful. The ATT 3G network provides much faster Internet access speeds than its Edge network. The call quality appears to have improved as well.

The new software released with the 3G iPhone (version 2) greatly improves the iPhone’s eMail abilities.  Although I have been partial to the Blackberry for eMail for some time, Apple has added some new features that the Blackberry does not have and, in some ways I now prefer the iPhone to the Blackberry for eMail.  I find the iPhone’s ability to handle email completely satisfactory.

You can easily add apps from the App Store, a division of the iTunes Store on the Apple website.  You have the choice of adding the apps through your computer and then synching them into the iPhone through iTunes or add them directly to your iPhone.  As some of the apps are fairly large, you will find that it works best to download them to your computer or to have your iPhone connected via WiFi when you download them.  Visit the Apple website at www.apple.com for more information or go directly to the App Store in the iTunes store and browse for apps.

My favorite non game apps include: Mobile News (a solid news aggregator), Tap Forms (a password protectable storage vault for your personal information such as credit card numbers, bank account numbers, etc.), Stocks (continuous reports on the Dow Jones, Nasdaq, S&P and other individual stocks of your choosing), Google (instant access for searching), ABA Journal (highlights of legal news), Now Playing (movies and times wherever you are in the US), Jott (notes you can leave yourself from any phone and recover on your iPhone in text), Yahoo One Connect (instant Yahoo), Evernote (grab it and store it), iWant (helps you locate restaurants, shops, etc. in your immediate vicinity) and TV.nu (what’s on TV). I have tried the Centro on the Verizon and the ATT networks. It works well on both, providing all the features we have come to know and enjoy on Palm devices in a smaller and more compact form. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes psp I replaced my Treo with a Centro and have not missed the Treo’s bulk. The Centro’s screen is not as large as the Treo’s and I can’t read the screen without my glasses; but I couldn’t read the Treo’s screen without my glasses either, even though it is a bit larger. That is a function of my own age and diminishing near vision and something that moste of us will have to live with as we go kicking and screaming into the next phases of our lives.

The Centro handles eMail fairly well (I prefer the Blackberry and the iPhone to the Centro for eMail, but it does give you a good basic eMail service that many will find satisfactory).

The only real knock I have on the Centro results from the diminutive size that I like so much about it. I have thick fingers and that poses a bit of an issue with the very tiny keyboard on the Centro. I have finally developed reasonable skill with it, by learning to use my fingernails to strike the keys. The shape of the keys is so curved that fingernails work better than trying to use a stylus or a pen. Waking the Dead film I do not type as fast on the keyboard as I can on others, such as the Blackberry or the older and larger Treos; but I still like it better than the Treo. It runs on the Palm OS and works pretty well as a phone on both the ATT and the Verizon systems. For those of you that travel internationally, Palm offers it for direct sale in an unlocked GSM version.

Verizon and ATT have very favorable pricing for the Centro in conjunction with two-year contracts.  Without the contract, you can get the Centro directly from Palm.  The last time I checked, ATT offered the Centro for $69 with a two-year contract, Verizon offered the Centro for $99 with a two-year contract and Palm sells the unlocked GSM version for $299.

If you do not want the features of Apple’s iPhone, but still want a solid phone/PDA combination, the Centro may prove a good choice for you.  It does have the ability to store music, photographs, documents and other information;  it also works with FileMaker mobile and a large number of other programs that developers have built for the Palm OS platform over the years.

Last week I wrote about the Blackberry Bold, identifying it as the best piece of hardware RIM (Research in Motion) (www.rim.com 007 Casino Royale film ) had produced to date.

I also noted that the Bold’s tenure at the top lasted about as long as a full moon, since RIM released the Storm shortly after the Bold. As good as the Bold is, I like the Storm better.

Why do I prefer the Storm? First of all, it provides all the services and capabilities of the Bold and more. It’s included camera produces 3.2 megapixel stills (compared to 2.0 for the Bold). The camera includes automatic flash, automatic focus and a 2x digital zoom.

The Storm also does videos, plays music, handles text messages, does email as well as any Blackberry device ever has (and I have thought Blackberry did the best job with email of any PDA or multi-function phone for some time).

Other features include built-in GPS, Blackberry Maps, SMS/MMS, Bluetooth and Micro SD card support. The phone works on Verizon’s 3G system (you can only get it with Verizon service for the present time).

What really sets the Storm aside, however, is the new SurePress touch screen technology employed by RIM in the device. The Dark Half download The Storm has no physical keyboard, no dial and no trackball. You navigate by pressure and motion on the touch screen. Although the screen presents a solid surface, when you press it, you feel a physical click response as confirmation of the completion of the contact. The large icons and virtual keys make it pretty easy to get around and to use the keyboard. The technology offers a lot of cool options as well. If you use it in portrait mode while performing a text function (such as email), you get a keypad similar to that on the Pearl (2 characters per key) and relatively small keys.
